DOT4 is backwards compatible with DOT3 systems. Most bottles will actually say that in the fine print if not on the front label. IIRC the main difference is an increase boiling point for fluid certified as DOT4. That probably won't make a bit of difference for a clutch, but is an added bonus for brakes with a more direct heat path.

Coop. Carefully remove fork caps and use a cheapo siphon pump. Compress forks and get as much as possible out, make sure you get even levels of oil going back together. The Honda Shadow RS / VT750RS has 4000 mile / 6400 km service intervals. But you only need to change the oil every 8000 miles / 12800 km or annually.
